places to ignore that car behind you
is on the freeway, which was

And while the most obvious dis-

for their chosen exit dozens of

metres before actually getting to it,
causing a frustrating and dangerous |
“clutter behind them which often

* results in high. speed rear-enders.
-:” Folks, for the most part, there are
big long stretches of road Jeading off
» the highway called “deceleration
“Hanes” and guess what, that’s where
“you ‘are supposed to be decelerating. |

I assume that many of you are .

slowing to that posted “exit” speed.
but please keep in mind that those -
signs are printed on yellow —
meaning they are advisory signs.
only. Please slow to that speed only
after you are fully and completely
off the highway.

But there are exceptions.

The Capilano Road and the Lynn
Valley Road exits off Upper Levels
Highway are anomalous — these
deceleration lanes drop suddenly
down hill and/or around a comer.
Still, many drivers over-exaggerate
their need to slow down.

Drivers who slow for the ;
Mountain Highway exit, westbound,
perturb me the most. This decelera-
tion shoots practically vertically for
dozens of metres and al! too often I
see drivers slow down for it while
still on the highway only to go back
to the gas pedal half way-up that hill,
What a waste of gas and brakes. net
to mention the brutal disruption to
the cars farther back trying to accel-
erate onto the highway from the Cap
College area.

Vic Neff, a driving supervisor at
BC Rail, phoned me with a related
lament — drivers who leave too
much space between vehicles when
stopping in traffic, Half a a carlength
between vehicles is appropriate; two
or three is not (except when stop-
ping on’ hill behind a driver unfa-
miliar with a clutch).-You see, some
cars may wish to scoot into one of
those left or right-turn pockets but
cannot because space is wasted.

_.. Please, drivers, be aware of the
cars behind you, use that rear-view

mirror, try to be courteous and, of

course, be safe.
