Fashion showcase invites

DESIGN EXPOSE ’93 is _an
event being organized by the
Young Associates of the Van-
couver Art Gallery and is sched-
~ uled for early November 1993.

The exhibition, which will be
staged at the Vancouver Art
Gallery, will showcase young,
up-and-coming designers and
their fall/winter collections.

Design Expose i is open to any
designer who is a recent graduate
of a fashion program or talented
newcomers who would like a
chance to promote their designs.

The deadline for submissions
is June 1, 1993. Portfolios il-
lustrating at least six designs,
which can be of any category
from casual to evening wear, will
be submitted to a jury.

DESIGNERS HAVE gone
soft: for spring. They show
softly draped clothing in
smooth, touchable . fabrics
for work, which describes a
romantic side of dressing.

in essence, if you took your
idea of feminine clothing, then
subtracted the flounce-and frill,
you would have the kind of fash-
ion featured this season. ;

Cutting through the clutter,
fashion designers imply romance
and understand femininity, but
have learned to understate it.

They have kept the gardcn-
party florals, watercolor pastels,
crisp linens and cottons, the flow-
ing skirts,. accented waists and
classic necklines, but have given
them ’90s polish.

Designers realize that the con-
trived and impractical aspect of
traditionally romantic dressing has
gone, and the effortless relaxed
look is what women seek today.

' final show, and judging will be

completed by July 1, to give
competitors adequate time to
prepare for Design Expose ’93.

Margareta Design proves that

do with. syrupy details and
everything to do with attitude in
its spring ’93 collection.

It introduced the line at a fash-
ion show held at The Georgian
Ciub, 400 West. Hastings St.,
showing spare, elegant fashions in
touchable fabrics. And‘ they are
decidedly romantic, without a ruf-
fle or a bow in sight.

The clothing appealed to the
entire audience luncheoning at the
exclusive club.

It offered just the right dose of
femininity -for the traditional
ladies to call their own, and also
enough -sophistication for the
‘modern women to add to their
take-me-seriously wardrobes. °
