NVC approves $20,000 Lower Lonsdale study WITH THE receipt of a provincial grant to examine the possible revitalization of the Lonsdale Avenue core, North Vancouver City Council recently approved a $20,000 study of the area, even though some Lonsdale businesspeople may net want to be revitalized. By Pameta Lang Contributing Writer The $20,000 study will deter- mine a strategy for revitalizing the pedestrian shopping areas of . Lower and Central Lonsdale Avenue. The provincial grant will pay for half of that cost. But Ald. Rod Clark took issue with initiating another revitaliza- tion study in the area. “They (the merchants) feel revitalized to death,’’ he said. Some Lower Lonsdale mer- chants won’t finish paying for a mid-’80s_ revitalization plan until 1997. That plan was the same program now being considered, but it was restricted to a smaller area. SECU NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL Clark also pointed out that council has yet to make a decision regarding heritage guidelines for the Lower Lonsdale core; he said those guidelines and the merchant interest should be determined be- fore the study proceeds. But Ald. Barbara Perrault said the area needs some visual im- provements, and to do that coun- cil needs some focus and direc- tion. The study will involve public participation from both Central and Lower Lonsdale merchants, with the Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Commission and the Arts Com- mission being consulted from the Start, according to a Nov. 6 report from Gary Penway of the city’s development services department. “It is essential to have the sup- port of the business community,”’ he said. The idea for a study of the Lonsdale core and the possible revitalization plan stemmed from a recent report on establishing design guidelines for the historic Lower Lonsdale core.
