Vancotiver's successful models have more than beauty in common, They ure real- istic, well-respected and they're reaching for the top. Carol Crenna FASHION STATEMENTS While no one is perfect, some models have learned how to em- phasize the good and ‘‘eliminate”’ the bad. They can conceal! their imperfections effectively, and even turn their worst features into their most attractive personal assets. When a model walks into a room heads turn. Not just male heads, but women, too, acknowl edge, adinire and envy her because they know she is one of the chosen few who knows how to use the tools that she’s got. Though they may have well- kept secrets, some models are will- Photo submitted JENNIFER STEWART... well- travelled NV model has worked in Europe and Japan. ing to share their knowledge, and disclose those ‘‘truths’’ learned both on and off the job. Here, some of the most sought-after North Shore models tell you how to look great and stay that way all summer long. © Jennifer Stewart, 21, lives in North Vancouver and has an en- viable list of passport stamps to her modelling credit including Milan, Florence, Paris, Tokyo and New York. She is represented by Richard's Model and Talent Agency in Vancouver. Stewart stresses a daily skincare regime that was learned when she began modelling at the carly age of 13. She uses a cleanser, astr- ingent and moisturizer vice a day. Her preferred cleanser is a gel, made by Shiseido and LOreal, which she says is less of- Iy than a@ cream but less harsh thar a soap. She moisturizes with European Nivea, which she chums is much different than the product sold in Canada. She advises women to be aware Role models of their own skin tone when choosing cosmetics, instead of simply copying colors that they have seen on models in magazines. “F often seen wonien wearing colors that are much too harsh or muted for their complexion. | have been experimenting with cosmetics for years. | recently discovered that eyeshadow powder goes on much smoother, with no streaking, and stays darker if it is mixed with a little water. [ simply dampen a sponge and pat on the pewder.”” She feels that eyebrows are just as important as eyelashes to highlight the eyes, and uses cither mascara or gel to shape and hold them in place. For long-lasting lip color, even after eating, Stewart first applies moisturizer, then covers the lips with foundation, then uses a lipliner (the coloring agent in a lipliner Jasts much longer than a lipstick), then) she applies the lipstick, and then brushes on powder, She states that a fipliner is a must to shape the lips properly: “If you simply add lipstick, you may get color, but the lips will Jack definition and shape.” For a dramatic and daring change to her look, and perhaps as a statement against the popular 60s inspired bouffant hairstyles of which she has grown very tired, Stewart now keeps her hair ex- tremely short, in a brush cut which she has styled by a barber. “It costs $8 and it takes 10 to 15 minutes. They cut only short hair there all day long, so they know how to do it. My whole family gets their hair cut at Park Royal Barber Shop."’ To add interest to her look, Stewart wears wigs, especially in the evening. She has a couple of styles which she says often get compliments, even from people who realize that it is not ‘the real thing.”’ Through her international modelling experience, Stewart has learned that the most important beauty factocs while travelling are not to deviate from your usual eating, sleeping and exercising habits. **r don’t know how many madels that I have travelled with who get ill, gain weight or simply look frazzled because they chang- ed their routines.’’ This includes drinking lots of bottled water, and tesisting jet lag by not steeping until evening hours even if you've taken a red eye flight, exercising as soon aS you get to your desti- nation, and not drinking alcohol while travelling. © Anna Bin, 31, feels her age is a benefit to her modelling because she is much more confident and experienced compared to when she modelled at 19. Bin, who teaches modelling part-time at Charles Stuart Agen- cy in North Vancouver, modelled in Toronto for many years and then travelled across the country as Gitano’s exclusive showroom model. She states that women do not have to spend a lot of money on beauty products. And although she knows many models who use odd substances for beauty pur- poses, she sticks to Ivory soap and water for cleansing, and cold cream for removing makeup. “Simple usually works the best,”’ she says. Though she is naturally blonde, Bin dyes her hair red. She keeps her naturally curly hair long, washes it every other day, and uses a moisturizing pack by Fer- mydol once a week. She has oily skin, made worse by humid weather, and has to check her makeup often throughout the day to make sure that it stays put. She wears only water based makeup, and says that most cosmetics wil cake if not put correctly on oily skin, She stresses that powdering is ex- tremely important for her skin type, and uses basic Corn Silk powder, which is coarser, and therefore absorbs oil better. She has been modelling off and on since she was 19 and is now with Charles Stuart Agency. Forbes, a North Vancouver res- ident, actually weighs less now than before she was pregnant, declaring that she simply cut out fat, as opposed to sugar, in her dict, and she gets regular exercise. She drinks more than eight glasses of water every day, which she feels also contributes to weight loss, as well as a clear complex- ion. For exercise, Forbes walks a lot, and takes periodic ballet and acrobic classes. On her very long, naturally cur- ly hair she uses Neutrogena shampoo.
