After 14 years with the North Vancouver- based Flicka Gymnastics Club, Ray says she has only this season and next beiare sne 1s too geriatric (by the sports definition) to compete for Canada. “Tim near the end.” she says. adding that Canada has no national-level gymnasts in their 26s. But Ray. who has consistently garnered top meet finishes this season. has clearly identified two goais she wants to accomplish before she moves on to university gymnastics. First. she'd like to compete at the nigh performance level next season; then she'd like to compete at the 1992 Olympics. This year Ray failed to qualify for high per- forinance after finishing 25th at the Elite Canada meet December in Toronto. The top 24 gymnasts qualified for high performance. Ray. wha has been in high performance for two years, says she'll be back to have another and her last crack at high perfor- mance next year Meanwhile, she is also setting her sights on the {992 Olympics to be held in arcelona. She aims to be one of seven gymnasts on ihe Canadian team. But if she misses, Ray, who was born in England, is also look- ing at the pessibility of competing for {ngland if she doesn’t make the Canadian squad. The Olympic trials are to be held at the end of this year. Built fike a small powerhouse, Ray says her favorite events are beam and vault. She claims she’s never been good at bars and isn’t very flexible for a gymnast. “Llike the power parts of gymnastics the best.’ she says.
