“Mulfy’’ Graves (Goldie). Or,
perhaps, it’s a gruelling endurance
test for the audience to see how
many explosions/chases/explosions
Ichases they can take in one

film.

This is pure routine — a
romance on the run as bad guy
David Carradine pursues the man
whose testimony sent him to jail
for 15 years. David Seltzer, cred-
ited here as head writer, allows
our heroes to escape by car,
plane, foot or any other device
that’s around to keep the story in
motion.

But, back to the gams and tush
theory.

Goldie is a corporate lawyer
who can sit in ona business
meeting and dreamily ponder days
gone by at the same time (now, |
didn’t say successfully). Like all
good lawyers, she wears revealing
twirly skirts that exploit her leg-
giness. Mel, on the other hand,
keeps getting hurt in the butt.
(They say “‘butt” a lot in this
movie, too.) One scene actually
reveals Mel's posterior but there's
a rumor going around that it really
isn’t his. It’s a stunt bum.

One thing for sure, though.

movie has to offer more than a
game of “spot the location.”

Mel's character said it best with
his catch phrase, “This can’t be
good for you.”

Pino “The Squid.” “‘Milkbot-
tle’’ Montebello. Frank “Boom
Boom" Amarouso. With
nicknames like those, you know
you're in Mafia territory.

Peter Falk and Emily Lloyd team
up as father and daughter
wiseguys, Dino and Cookie
Capisco. The rebellious teen
hasn’t seen her father since he was
convicted 10 years earlier. Seeing
his surly, resentful gum-popping
kid doesn't fil Dad with pride, ei-
ther. When he hires her as his
driver, however, they discover
they are just (vo peas in a mob.

Fine performances by all, in-
cluding Brenda Vaccaro as Dino’s
shrill, dog grooming wife and
Diane Wiest as Cookie’s mother.
Jerry Lewis plays it straight (and
very convincingly) as one of
Dino’s old partners who may be
out to retire the recent parolee.
Falk, as usual, is exemplary, a

scene-stealing rogue who manages -

to keep one step ahead of the FBI
and his murderous partnets-in-
crime.
