NV man faces arson charges A NORTH VANCOUVER man faces theee charges, including at- tempted murder, following an early-morning arson fire at 2 home located at 543 East 3rd St. in North Vancouver. An earlier News account reported that North Vancouver RCMP had charged 26-year-old James Reginald Watson with assault and atson charges. But Watson appeared Thursday in North Vancouver provincial court to face charges of arson, attempted murder and assault caus- ing bodily harm laid against him in connection with the Monday morning fire. Watson allegedly attempted to kill Liam Michael Schaeffer, a man who had been temporarily staying with a couple who lived in the basement suite at 543 East 3rd St. Schaeffer was allegediy attacked by Watson with a chair and a club, which had five bolts and nuts affixed to its end. The fire occurred after the alleged altercation between Watson and Schaeffer. An occupant of the basement suite heard a thump against a door just after 1 a.m. Monday and fire broke out moments later. Six people living in the house managed to escape the burning huilding without injury. Foul play isuspected in death NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP have determined that human re- mains located Monday afternoon on the bank of the Seymour River near Charles Street are that of an unidertified woman. The cause of death has not been determined, but foul play is suspected. The remains are described as being that of a white female age 25 to 35, with long brown hair, approximately 5’8"’ tall and weighing 120 to 140 pounds. The body was found with no clothing. The police have thus far been unable to determine the length of time the remains had been on the river bank. Any member of the public with information that may be of assistance to the police investigation is asked to call 985-1311. Backyard fires banned in WV THE CURRENT dry spell and a fire Wednesday have resulted in the cancellation of all outdoor backyard burning in West Van- couver until further notice. West Vancouver Fire Department firefighters were called to 4313 Rockridge Rd. at 2:17 a.m. Wednesday to put out 2 roof fire. According to a fire department spokesman, garden refuse being burned in a fireplace inside the home, caused the cedar shingle roof to catch fire. When firefighters arrived, the homeowner was putting out the fire with a hose. Fire damage was contained tc the roof. As of April 2, West Vancouver residents are required to purchase a permit before burning garden refuse outdoors. The new bylaw permits the burning of dry gerden refuse Oct. 1 to April 30, except for Sundays and statutory holidays. Grad beach party set TICKETS ARE still availiable for the North Shore’s first-ever all- night alcohol and drug-free indoor beach party. To Tuesday, 200 tickets had been sold to the April 7 event, but organizers are expecting a last-minute rush. They hope to sell 500 tickets to local 1990 high school grads. The event is scheduled to take place at the Lonsdale rec centre from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday. Organized by the District Schools’ CounterAttack Committee and sponsored by the North Shore News, ICBC, White Spot, Pep- si, Shaw Cable, North Shore Credit Union, Sussex and Dino's, the party will include a number of ‘rad’ events. From 10 p.m. to midnight, watch for an underwater kissing con- test, a maie wet T-shirt contest and a singing in the shower contest. After midnight events include a casino, limbo and dance contests and a 5:30 a.m. breakfast. Tickets to the beach party are avaclable at all local high schools.
