Youth worker produces teen

A LOCAL youth worker has
brought teen peer counsell-
ing skills to video.

Recently about 20 community
group representatives atrended a
preview screening of a peer
counselling training videc: <ntitled,
Empowering Youth.

The video was put tozether by
Capilano Youth Projec" youth
worker Terry Bulych. The produc-
tion of the video was mace possi-
ble by a grant from the Ministry of
Advanced Education.

Thirty-two teens from Balmoral
and Handsworth high schools and
the Capilano Youth Project par-
ticipated in the video, which was
filmed in October.

The format of the videc: includes
an introduction to the concept of
peer counselling. Fourteen short
skits, each divided into couplets,
illustrate one counselling skill and
each couplet shaws how and how
not to approach a counselling en-
counter.

The seven skill cacegories
covered in the video inctude At-
titude, Road Blocks (blocks which

productive communica-
tion), Empathy, Questioning
Skills, Self-Disclosure, Values
Clarification and Problem Solving.

Bulych has taught peer counsell-
ing in the past. But she said, ‘‘!
thought a visual aid would be more
helpful. It’s been received well.
They get to sce the examples work-
ing and how everything comes
together.”'

The video is being used as part
of a peer counselling course being
offered by Bulych. Each course
runs for four weeks, two sessions
per week, for teens age 13 to 19.

Participants pick up listening
skills and offer support to other
teens by identifying and exploring
their thoughts and feelings about
problems they are experiencing.
Participants benefit by sharpening
personal communication skills,
developing self-esteem, confidence
and self-awareness.

Peer counsellors provide positive
role models to youth throughout
the community.

November, and a second started
earlier this month. To register in
the third course, scheduled to
begin in March, call the Delbrook
