HARMLESS THOUGH I am, I seem to worry some peo- ple. I get the impression, for instance, that Mary-Jane Shaw of West Vanceuver sticks pins into a doll named Doug every nisi before going bye-byes. Mary-Jane, bless her little Reform Party heart, is upset about my having faced down Preston Manning at a recent meeting in West Van, Preston being her lead- er and teacher. So upset is she, in- deed, that she wrote a hysterical missive to this newspaper which appeared last Sunday under the headline ‘‘Dong Collins’ way is not the Reform Party way.’ There was also a screed from Neil Thompson under the heading “Reform Party idea bigger than Collins.” The letters dealt with my abor- tive attempts to run for that party, and it will please both writers to know that I thoroughly agree with the sentiments expressed in the headlines, at least. But there are a couple of things that must be pointed out, the first being that Mary-Jane should have been honest and identified herself. She is the wife of Gordon Shaw, the first vice-chairman of the party and Mr. Manning’s boy, so to speak. Thompson, of course, is the one who tried to pick up the pieces after Manning nixed the Collins candidacy. Both are Mann- ing-firsters. Why are they so concerned about something which is history? Much though I regret to pursue the discussion, it is because the ‘‘Col- lins affair” won't go away. It dogs © their every move. It plagues their phones. They still hear it daily. As Manning himself stated at the above-mentioned meeting, it arose even during the recent by- election in Alberta in which Deborah Grey was elected. It is also a fact that it led to an untold number of resignations and loss of funds. So don’t look at me, folks. Look at Manning and Shaw, both of whom were too dense to see NVD Council dines on Grouse MORTH VANCOUVER District Council members were dinner guests of Grouse Mountain Resorts Tuesday night. ‘A wide-ranging agenda looked at Grouse Mountain’s role in the North Vancouver economy and as - a tourist destination. Ernie Crist declined the in- vitation and plans to ask questions about the meeting at the next district council meeting. ‘{ don’t feel it is appropriate for council to be wined and dined by a potential developer,’ said Crist. Reform Party meeting was held in the Coach House Inn and 59 per cent of the delegates voted in favor of removing the leader’s power of veto over candidates. And that was a direct result of the Collins affair. The fact is that Reformers do not want to be a party like the others. They want the constituency to be boss, as promised by Mann- ing. They do not want it to be a rubber stamp for manipulators. (Manning did not even consult his executive in the Collins issue. They were informed only after the event.) Don’t take my word for any of this. Just read the resolution pass- ed by the North Vancouver consti- -tuency right after Preston dropped his bomb. It stated that his action had done “irreparable harm’’ to the party; that it was in direct contravention of the party’s stated position with regard to signing candidates’ nomination papers; that Manning had violated the principle that the decision of members and constitu- ents should be paramount, and that those responsible should resign. Did I say Mary-Jane was upset? An understatement. The night I faced Manning down in West Van she was hooting and hollering like a fish-wife. Most unladylike. But I spoke for two reasons: first, it is my style to challenge people to their faces; second, Manning's of- fice had been dispensing what I might call the Kremlin's version of events. Manning had no answers that night and has none now, Am I upset? Don’t be silly.
