Traced beck to 1880 when one William Gray decided to make his living supplying locals with fresh waterfowl, decoys are a B.C. coastal tradition. “B.C.’s decoy history was very brief before the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1917 shut (widespread hunting) down,” explained ex- hibit coordinator Terry Lewis. Using these ‘‘outstanding carv- ings,’’ hunters were having so much success attracting hapless waterfowl that they were ‘‘just killing too many birds.’’ Featured in the exhibit are (he deceptive decoy works of premiere B.C. carvers Percy Bicknell, Allan Mills, Harry Holloway, Tru Oliver and Wilf With the assistance of contem- porary carver and decoy collector Ron Gruber, Lewis was able to exhibit some of the most attrac- tive and collectable birds. In atiempting to take the Fourth Street museum in a new direction, Lewis is ‘‘bringing in a wide variety of shows with broad appeal,’’ including the recent shows of soft drink promotional art and historic coin-operated machines. The four-day, Western Canada Book Fair held fast week at the University of British Columbia featured some 90,000 works from publishers in the U.S., Canada and Britain. Your reviewer staggered home to the North Shore with no less than three shopping bags overflowing with nearly 100 catalogues listing the book offerings scheduled for imminent release. What are some of the titles BOOKS NOW followers can look forward to reading about during the coming months? What are the likely winners in the print wars featuring regional, national and international inkdom? Children’s Stories Without a doubt the biggest success this year will also be the biggest surprise for parents and admirers of the classic children’s tales from Wilhelm Grimm: a story lost for over 150 years. Collins Publishers will have Dear Mili, a tale told by Grimm in a letter toa little girl in 1816 (now translated by Ralph Manheim and illustrated by Maurice Sendak), in bookstores well in time for Christmas.
