n 6 — Sunday, July 3, 1988 - North Shore News INSIGHTS Joes the Auld Sod stir in your Irish bones...? WANTED: 340 IRISH-CANADIANS with $60 to spend on pride in their heritage. Tax-deductible, plus a personal monument to their donation in the UBC Library. The $20,400 is needed to buy for the library a copy of a unique book that has miraculously surviv- ed over 1,200 years of warfare, pillaging and fire. The 680-page Book of Kells, an exquisitely il- lustrated manuscript of the four Gospels, was the phenomenal! work of eighth-century Irish monks at a time when Irish monasteries were Europe's cultural ati intellectual centre. One of the all-time master- pieces of Western art, it has repos- ed since 1661 in the library of Trinity College, Dublin — guarded day and night as Ireland’s greatest ‘national treasure. And, now, a Swiss publishing firm specializing in fine art reproduction has been commissioned to prepare a limited edition of 1,480 facsimiles of The Book of Kells for art connoisseurs, scholars, libraries and investors. ‘ Produced by high tech photo-elec- tronic processes on paper closely resembling the original parchment, the copies will be scarcely distinguishable from the real thing. In North Van a true son of Ireland, Jim O’Friel, is the local member of the Book of Kells Committee campaigning to raise the 340 $60 donations needed by July 17 for UBC’s.copy of the treasure: If the Auld Sod still stirs in your Irish bones — or even if you simply like the whole idea — call Jim at 929-6473 for further photo submitted’ THE BOOK OF KELLS...2 treasure of Western civilization | for UBC? © Watch | your language T HERE IS much to be said both for and against | ‘inclusive - language,”’ . that is, language which | represents both genders equally, - While jit. is becoming more and more common to refer.to a “‘chairperson’? rather than a ‘‘chairman,”’ it- may be going too far to start blacklisting words such as manhole, or history (which is now sometimes written as ‘‘herstory”’).. i What is essential, however, is that people continue to become more aware of the attitudes reflected in our. inherited language and the manner in which we put this language te daily use. - For example, local councils recently voted against a proposed motion that the title “‘alderman’’ be changed to “councillor.’’, The men and women who made this decision agreed that the women engaged in civic poli- tics. are given the opportunities and respect due to. them, and that a formalization of ‘this: attitude. by changing their titles was unnecessary — fair enough. ‘ But on the other hand,. more attention should be paid. to words and titles. that are inappropriate or. disrespectful. Ald. Frank Morris provided & case in point at a re- cent public hearing in North. Van City chambers. Mor- ris twice referred to a woman making a clear, concise presentation as ‘“‘young: lady”, while he consistently referred to'all male presenters by the title ‘‘Mister’* or ! “Alderman’’. He called. another woman by her. first - name, something he had not done with any of the men.’ Ab ‘worst, ; this appears to be a patronizing practice; at best; it is inappropriately familiar. | Tt nothing = else, the. push ‘for inclusive . language : should. force us all to scrutinize our accepted attitudes ‘ more closely. : j [ i details. Well out from the west ‘coast shoreline, they noticed what first appeared to be a seal. On closer examination it turned out to be a dog! They hauled the sodden, exhausted mutt aboard and even- tually managed to trace its owner, a west coast fish farm employee. On the day in question he’d rowed out to sea in a dinghy, leaving the _ dog — which apparently couldn’t /Pbear to be parted from him — on { the beach. For faithful Fido and ’ his savior, Gordon, the rest, as they say, is now history. eee WRAP-UP: ‘It’s a dream we've had since we opencd,”’ said Dr. Phil Ashmore, chief of surgery at the Children’s Hospital.
