Capilano By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter THE NORTH Shore's College will be one of community colleges and affiliated institutions across Canada celebrating the Nov. 23 to 29 Coal- lege Weck '87. Capilano over 200 Organized by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, the event is a second annual toast to the value of community col- leges, which goes far beyond their scholastic and cultural programs and resources. “Good community colleges arc much more than just classrooms,” Capilano College president Douglas Jardine said Thursday. They should, he said, act as catalysts for the economic and social development of the areas they serve. With the establishment of such projects as the North Shore Enter- prise Development Centre and the North Shore Economic Develop- ment Advisory Committee, the college, Jardine said, is adhering to that philosophy. celebrat Results of a telephone survey of 200 North Shore residents com- missioned by Capilano College in the first two weeks of November showed that 96 per cent of those polled knew the college's location and 78 per cent had visited its campus. Thirty-four per cent had taken courses at the school. CAPILANO College president Douplas Jardine...“‘Good com- munity colleges are much more than just classrooms.” According to the poll, the North Shore News remains the primary source of information about the es college, with approximately 44 per cent of poll respondents indicating that they read the newspuper’s regular college coverage and its Cap Week column. But Jardine said public misconceptions about the college persist. The perception that the college has lower academic stan- dards than universities is wrong, he said. The college is now the first, not the second choice, for many high schoo! graduates and other stu- dents pursuing post-secondary ca- reers, Jardine said. Apart from the college’s high education standards, Jardine said Cap College, which has a current enrolment of 4,437 students, offers Jower fees than area universities (fees for a first year art student at Cap are $825 compared with $1,486 for a first year bachelor of arts student at UBC), a more con- venient location for North Shore residents, an increasingly good ac- ademic reputation, smaller class sizes than universities and an ex- cellent faculty.
