Race veteran and Lions Gate Hospital assistant director of pharmacy services Bob Nakagawa has compiled a short list of pre- race training tips and race-day Strategies and precautions for novice runners. Training prior to the race, Nakagawa said, should involve running at least three days per week with alternate days of runn- ing and rest. A pace comfortable to individu- al physical abilities and degrees of fitness should be set. For beginn- ing runners, Nakagawa advises taking walking breaks during runs. Proper running shoes that are designed specifically for running, not basketball or tennis, should be worn. In order to learn the peculiarities of the Run For Research, runners should run a different portion of the race route on each training day, Nakagawa said. Copies of the route and registra- tion information can be picked up from Kathy Hunter at LGH. Call 988-3131, local 798. Registration forms can be picked up at the News. On race day, Nakagawa advises runners to dress for the weather conditions that day. Most people, he said, overdress. Runners should also have warmer clothing available to put on after the race. The most common mistake made by runners who have never competed in a 10-kilometre race, Nakagawa said, is to start out too quickly. “The most efficient method of racing is to run at an even pace,”’ he said. Runners who tire during the race Weather: Friday, cloudy with isolated showers. Saturday, cloudy. Highs near 15°C. Now in its second year, the Run For Research raises money for LGH medical research that has direct practical application to the community health needs of the North Shore. Because LGH is not designated as a research hospital, it receives no moncy from the pro- vincial government for research. In its first year, the run raised $4,400 for LGH research pro- grams. It is not so esoteric. It is all practically oriented.” Because the LGMRF is entirely a volunteer foundation, all money that it raises goes directly into research. In addition to contributing to a good cause, run participants will be eligible for the approximately 100 prizes that have been donated by area businesses. The grand prize is a $1,600 Sony television set. The Run For Research will start at 9 a.m. May 24 at the William Griffin Centre, 851 West Queens, North Vancouver, and will cover a 10-kilometre course of mixed ter- rain.
