@- Wednesday, December 24, 1986 - North Shore News Mailbox Views “neo- Dear Editor: I was watching a program on Cabic 9 which dealt with the grow- ing threat of neo-nazism in the Pacific Northwest. As ! heard about their promotion of white supremacy it occurred to me that | have heard all this before. Where else but from the North Shore News’ columnist. Now it all becomes clear where Collins got his ideology. He was a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. at is a well-known fact that cap- tives often take on the value system of their captors. This could explain his white su- Deat Editor: On behalf of Branch 118 of the Royal Canadian Legion I wish to thank all the generous and caring people in North Vancouver who supported our 1986 poppy cam- paign, thus enabling us to make it the success it turned out to be. The Royal Canadian Legion holds this annual poppy campaign to enable us to raise the funds needed to aid our less fortunate veterans and their families and, as ser.ice officer for Branch 118 of the Legion, I am more than grate- ful that, due to all you kind and caring people our obligations will be met for yet another year. At this time, once again I would like to remind you and the young people, especially, what the poppy stands for: It is not for the glory of war but rather the sadness — it is a symbol for the peace we all earnesily want and a remembrance of those who gave their lives and, in some cases, those who are still suffering that we may have this peace which no one wants more than a veteran who has been there. So, always wear the poppy with pride and remember to have pride in our past and faith in our future. Valerie G. Campbell Poppy Campaign Chairman/86 Royal Canadian Legion Branch 118 Evergreen staff appreciated Dear Editor: We hear so many negative things about hospitals that | would like to say thank you publicly to the staff and volunteers of Evergreen House. They have helped to arrange a lovely memorial service for my friend and longtime resident Mrs. McPhee, and for other residents of the house who have recently passed away, ’ Rev. Pope conducted the ser- vice, everyone was made very wel- come and it was a fitting tribute to those who had been hospital- bound for many years. Joy M. Shakespeare North Vancouver iabelled Nazi’ premacy crusade ~ his loathing of anyone who isn’t: white, Anglo- Saxon, Protestant. It fits in with shis aping of nazism’s ‘ideal woman"’ -—- a woman in the kitch- en, breeding children, obeying men. This outdated concept has been rejected years ago by thinking people. I can understand one man pro- fessing neo-Nazi ideas but I can't understand why a neighborhood newspaper would pay him to espouse them. Surely it is time the North Shore News takes a second Jook at what they are promoting. Doris McNab West Vancouver IDEAS ‘HAVEN'T CHANGED’ Doug still not S.A. ‘expert’ Dear Editor: ft seems a shame that Mr. Col- lins has wasted that much money to go on a two-week tour of South Africa. His ideas and attitude of that country haven't changed one iota. It seems evident that Mr. Col- lins’ South African tour was not that of an impartial and open- minded journalist and observer, What also seems evident is that he is seeking credibility by being able to say that he was there. Two weeks on a battlefield of decades do not make him an expert. Democracy, according to Concise Oxford dictionary the is: (stafe practising) government by the people. This makes the right to vote the most powerful but peace- ful weapon of removing a gov- ernment whose policies the majori- ty of the people do not believe in. Most other methods of removing an unwanted government are non-peaccful. What Mr. Collins is either blind to or refuses to discuss is the fact that South Africa has never had for decades, a democratic gov- erainent, since the majority of its people never had the right to vote for a ruling government. Trade between South Africa and other countries over decades of years was not to make South Aftica (the country) powerful but to make the white minority gov- ernment powerful. Now that sanc- tions as a peaceful means are being tried to bring to South Africa a truer form of democracy, the likes of Mr. Collins and Mr. Bill ‘Fan. tastic’’ Vander Zalm scream that it will not help the blacks. Trade at this time has not helped the blacks experience democracy. If trading hasn’t worked and now Collins says that sanctions won't work why does our wise King Collins not give us other peaceful alternatives as a solution for a democracy in South Africa?
