Course unravels | mystery lof watercoior| painting WATERCOLOR is no more or less difficult to learn than the other painting media, and is definitely cheaper, cleaner and often faster, says painter Cynthia Nugent. Mistakes can be corrected and areas of a painting can be rework- ed by a variety of methods if ar- tists change their minds. There is room for spcentaneity, she ex- plains. Nugent’s six-week course of painting flowers in watercolor will be offered by North Shore Conti- nuing Education at Sutherland School Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Sept. 23. Artists often get waylaid sear- ching for just the right thing to paint, she says. In this case, a fresh bouquet will be presented each week and students will be en- couraged to concentrate on tech- nique and interpretation. MASTERS EXAMINED The work of master water- colorists will be examined and par- ticipants will experiment with various styles such as repre- sentational, expressionist, abstract and primitive (or naive). There vt be a demonstration each week, a critique of the previous week’s assignment, and an hour to work on the new ideas presented in the demonstration. Basic watercolor techniques and materials will be reviewed. Nugent beheves that flowers as subjects offer many advantages. Color, tone and compositional possibilities are endless, while the problematic areas of perspective and anatomy can be put aside for another time. The structure of most flowers is graceful and interesting without being so complex that it boggles the artist attempting to get it all down on paper. UNIVERSAL DESIGN The flower motif in design is so universal that abstraction and per- sonal interpretations are not too great a leap for most artists to at- tempt, explains Nugent. It is the way the subject is painted that conveys anything at all to the viewer, she says. But the painting is more readily accessible to the viewer if the subject is a fa- miliar or well-loved one. Nugent predicts participants in the course will be surprised to see how individual works differ and will be happy to find that although each painting is different, they each have their charm or beauty. She says the concept of the “*best’’ painter goes by the wayside when you can see the diversity of expression of the same subject and realize that you are attracted to more thi. one, if not all, of the works.
