I feel it is im- portant for electors in our riding to know my position on this issue. In letters to constituents and through encouraging the District of North Vancouver to accept a referendum on world disarmament, I have consistently expressed my belief in the need to create an atmosphere for mutual, balanced, and verifiable reductions in nuclear arms. The collective security of the world hinges upon the principle that the best defence against an enemy’s use or threat to use nuclear weapons is the threat to use them back. Deterrence as a policy of peace has provided us with forty years without world war. I cannot support proposals which would im- Turner lacks guts Dear Editor: We watched the two televised debates one on Tuesday 24th July, in French and the 25th in English. All of us came to the same con- clusion that John Turner is a very weak man. He has not got the back- bone we need in the man who governs our Canada. All he can say about the shameful and insulting patronage ap- pointments by Trudeau, was that he had to agree to them. ‘*He was under the gun.”’ That its not good enough. Attack. on chickens Is ‘ludicrous’ Dear Editor: ~ As an organization vitally interested in the care and welfare of family pets, we wish to add our support to Martin Wouters. His chickens are few in number, kept scrupulously clean and are neither an annoyance nor a hazard to anyone In this society, filled with vile temptations, if would appear that this 16 year-old lad should not be deterred from, but rather applauded and encouraged to pursue his interest in such a wholesome, caring hobby One has only to view this hit- the flock to determine the time, meticulous labor and love that have gone into his project The whole issue appears to be ludicrous and extremely petty, and will surely be remembered come the next North Vancouver District clection Mes. I would hate to think how he ‘would act if we were in a serious crisis. After he became Prime Minister, he made some ap- pointments himself. He was already Prime Minister, he had the rights and the power to cancel every one of Trudeau patronage giveaways. We hear Mr. John Turner is concerned about the jobs pose restraints on one and not the other competitor as such restraints run the risk of upsetting the balance of deterrence upon which our security ultimately depends. The real question before us today is how we can best achieve policies which would reduce the recourse to nuclear weapons in Europe and elsewhere. The Progres- sive Conservative party ap- proaches this most important question through three fun- damental principles: 1. Canada’s foreign policy should rest on a_ bi-partisan search for consensus. 2. The cornerstone of our security is N.A.T.O. solidarity. 3. Only through strenghen- ing the non-nuclear deterrent can we reduce the present reliance on nuclear weapons. We believe that a determin- ed effort must be made to reduce this present dependence on nuclear weapons by substantially im- Proving the conventional component of our defence and promoting a_ greater degree of trust and dialogue between the two. super powers.
