Canada vs. Bermuda tonight For those who want to see Canada’s soccer best in action, then tonight's the night at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby when Canada hosts Bermuda in the first game of the quest to Los Angeles in 1984. The Canadian Olympic team, under coach Bob Bearpark, will take the field at 7:30 along with the Bermudans in the first of a LV colt Lynn Valley Colts began their 1983 baseball season being a strong contender for the League Championship. The first game, played at Norgate Park against the Coquitlam Cubs, | starting pitcher Mark Paat, rehef pitcher Tom Schimmer ended in a 4-4 tic. The second game, again at Norgate Park, against the Capilano team, was the first no hitter of the season for Tom Schimmer home and home series. It's a long, tough road to L.A. with more than 20 countries competing for the single spot open. Normally it would be for two entnes, but with the United States guaranteed a place in the finals because they are hosting the games, this zone can only choose one other country. Bermuda quickly put Canada out of the last Olympic round back in 1979 with 5-2 and 4-0 defeats, but the Canadian program has evolved since that time and Bob Bearpark expects a much different result this time around. ‘It’s critical we get a good result in the first round,’ says the English native out of Toronto, now living in Vancouver. ‘We're fit and capable and we'll be at- tempting to put Bermuda off Mark Paat, the first batter at the top of the first inning, hit the first pitch which was a home run and started the Lynn Valley energy flowing. Singles hit by Mark Paat, Scott McCullouch, Randy McLennan, John Powers, Robert Schneeweiss and Lawrence Neill combined with doubles hit by Geno Sakhrani, Mark Paat and Scott McCulloch brought the score to 13-1 for Lynn Valley in the bottom of the 4th LV ladies play ball The Lynn Valley Women's Athlete Club played the first games of the season recently Avalon Blues defeated Sam the Record Man 9-3 Mana Pisnth counted 4 runs with a grand slam home run Canadian Insulation and Earl's Industnes played an exciting game The pitching and fielding was strong for both teams Aided by a home run by Dot Elhot, Earls won by a 12 8 margin The Lynnwood Canadians played the Lynnwood Pub Final score was 135 for the Canadians y inning. Finally Lawrence Neill made it to first base on a bunt, stole second and third base and was hit home by Scott) McCulloch. Lynn Valley then came from behind and won the game 7- their game early in_ the match and knock home the first goal.’ ‘If they get one or two up, they could embarrass anyone with their skills and we won't let them do that!’ The Canadian team has players from five provinces with nine from Ontario and eight from British Columbia. One thing | have discovered dealing with our blossoming import business is that most people who drive imports don’t think of them as imports. | mean, to them, the cars have never been anywhere else, not like a bottle of wine or a fine wedge of exotic cheese. To the owners, and in fact to everyone, names like Honda, Mazda, Toyota and Datsun are just everyday words. Maybe the cars have been imported, but the words are part of the argot of the street by now, and that is what people relate to. Import-ant, Dept. So you can see | have a little trouble getting people to think of their cars as imports, and telling you folks that imports now make up nearly 50% of our business. If | say, ‘Bring in your imports’, people will think Pm talking about the silver Porche passing you on the highway, or some 1949 Morgan painted racing green. Not true, although we'll take them too. I quess what I really want to say is that we're on a roll right now, with the imports, we're tuned into them because we're doing sq many, so bring yours in. All this without having to list all the im-’ ports, like Volvo, Saab, Citroen ... you know what I mean. I hope. Vegas, Schmegas, Dept.
