Playing our game PATIENCE HAS to be the key in playing a team like Portland Timbers, and when we take the field against them later this af- ternoon, we will be patiently determined to come away with our third consecutive win. Any team which plays a tight defensive game always creates problems for the other side, and of course, we were no exception last - Saturday when we outplayed y Terry Yorath EPROP Portland in almost every category, then had to settle for an overtime win. The big thing we have to do this afternoon is_ to remember to play our own game and not get trapped into trying to do something suly to escape the tight man to man marking. What Timbers do, and of course they won their first two games of the season on the road by doing it, is to use a 4-4-2 which is a stifling system that tnes to lock up and deny us the midfield. That type of play gives us AT two options, both of which we tried last weck. We can have David Harvey kick upfield for Big Kay Hankin to bring down. but that created the problem. of trying to pick up the ball. The tight marking makes it extremely difficult to move onto the balls thai Ray was bringing down. The other system, and probably the mas! effective, is to move the bail through the midfield - a sh..rt passing game and patient build up moving in deep. This method yz:\es us the added advantage of usually being in their half of the field if we should happen to lose control. Far better to be in their end of the field than our own. And Timber's goal against us is a good example. That was a case where we lost the ball deep in our own end when our defense all tried to pull an offside trap without anybody directing it. It didn’t work. We heard about it at the half. The Timber style does not make for an attractive game and it’s usually used by a team that may have trouble moving the ball forward in attack. It's not easy trying to understand their thinking, especially in North America where teams are awarded bonus points for goals and the Timbers style. to date, has been to keep the score down. However, they may try and move out more agaimst us this afternoon. After all, it’s their first home game and I'm sure they don't want to bore their fans for a full 90 minutes. See you in a couple of weeks. Questions for Terry Yorath or Peter Lorimer can be addressed in care of North Shore News, 1139 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, B.C., V7M 284.
