A6 - Sunday News, December 14, 1980 EEE editorial page SRA g geen A Christian angle on unity Blue Buses alert The future of West Vancouver's beloved Blue Bus system, it appears, is not yet guaranteed despite assurances “in principle” last February from senior levels of government. At that time Mayor Derrick Humphreys threatened to lead a vote rebellion on the Greater Vancouver Regional District Board which would have scuttled the latter's takeover of transit responsibilities for the rest of the Lower Mainland unless the Blue Buses were allowed to remain independent. * He won his point. In return for his support the GVRD Board presented him with a draft letter promising continued independence for the West Van transit system under a special agreement to be concluded between West Van and the GVRD. But the “special agreement” has still not been signed and sealed. There are mounting suspicions that the GVRD — which has always wanted to integrate the Blue Buses into its own much less efficient system — may be dragging its heels with a view to eventually backtracking on its letter of intent to West Van. The highly personalized Blue Bus service is deservedly popular with West Van- couverites. Its fares are lower than those of GVRD (former Hydro) transit — despite which, its operating losses are also some 20% lower. And, of course, it represents a major West Van investment over the years. These are very solid reasons for retaining the Blue Buses as an independent operation. Meanwhile, Mayor Humphreys and his council need help to finally win their battle with the GVRD. Now is the time for West Van residents who want to keep the Blue Buses running to speak out — loud and clear. Innocent party The cars of REALLY bad drivers should be impounded, says a motor vehicle study. We have a better suggestion. Impound the drivers. Even licence suspensions don't stop hard-core offenders from getting behind a wheel again -- and a remedial course in jail would likely cost society less than leaving them on the road. Their cars, after all, are innocent. I am sure this thought has been expressed in much better phraseology by more gifted people than myself but with the more recent western political unrest showing itself in the suggested new party called “Western Federation” it is important that we consider the results of such unrest. Our forefathers built this great nation of ours, not only with sweat, blood and tears, but with a strong and pur- poseful determination to have a free country. Their united efforts have given each of us a proud and enviable heritage to enjoy today. However, this heritage is about to be short- lived if some rebels have their way. Yes, there are some proponents who are trying to destroy the very fibre of our great nation by shouting “separation”. In another day and another time this action would have been considered treason, but now it is an expression of our “rights”. As in most revolutions or uprisings there is always present the independent or rebellious aggression against the establishment or status LOCAL BOY DEPT.: With the appointment of Kenneth Dye as Canada’s new Auditor-General the North Shore has received its biggest national honor since one Pierre Elliot Trudeau slipped over here nine years ago {oO marry Margaret Stnclair. Now that the instigators of separation are becoming more vocal in the west it is just a matter of time before these seeds of dissension catch fire and we have a full- blown separation from Eastern Canada. After having lived in Montreal, Quebec for six years, I know we are much better to remain united one nation under God. Separation only alienates. It does not build for a strong nation. Is there no way for the East to get along with the West? Are there too many concessions that each has to make? Should the natural resources become exclusive to any one group of people who share in all the collective benefits of the country? More harm is done, in any form of government, when the people begin to look only to themselves. The one characteristic that sets Canadians apart from other nations is their willingness to give (example: Terry Fox fund raising campaign). Can we not be as giving to the rest of Canada to enjoy our resources? God personified this idea when He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem a sinful world. If you give, it will be given back to you - if you hoard, it will be taken away. This has been proven in all areas of life and since “charity must first begin at home”, each Canadian should be willing to share his blessings with other Canadians. If only our politicians would learn to apply this Christian principle of giving, instead of selfishly keeping our resources to ourselves, there would be no talk of separation. Our _ sister provinces would not feel threatened. There would be no inferiority and sunday brunch by Noel Wright PM's office had any say in 10) are interesting.
