Democracy reigns in NV City

North Vancouver City
aldermen reaffirmed the
concept of “one man one
vote” last week, after a
debate which saw council
members evenly split on the
new provincial legislation
that will give business
tenants the right to vote
where they rent.

At the previous meeting,
council had voted to write to
Municipal Affairs Minister
Bill Van Der Zalm to protest
the new law, which has been
passed but not yet
proclaimed.

On Monday. council
considered a letter from
Richmond asking them to
support a move io repeal
legislation.

Kroon. supported by Alder-
man Stella Jo Dean, put
forward a motion to support
the legislation.

Kroon said he was in
favour of business tenants
getting to vote in the
municipality where they rent
premises because he sup-
ported the maxim “he who
pays has a say.”

“The business person who
is a tenant in the community
is in a good position to know
the problems of the
municipality,” Dean said.

“Many people who sleep
in the municipality only
come here to watch TV and
to sleep.”

“I personally don't see any
difference between a
residential tenant and a
business tenant,” Alderman
