Brian Budd of Vancouver, a‘-member of Toronto Blizzard of the North American Soccer League and World . Superstar champion in 1978 and 1979, will join the head table as a speaker at the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum’s Annual. Banquet. of- Champions on- May 23rd, 1979-. at the Hotel Van- couver, Executive Director Peter Webster announced today. A former member of Vancouver Whitecaps where he was the team’s most popular player in 1976, Budd gained North American- .wide fame when he won his first ABC-TV World Superstars contest in 1978. He duplicated that feat - early this spring in the __} Bahamas where he defeated such well known athletes as Cleveland Browns’ Greg Pruitt, track and field star Peter Snell of New Zealand, high jumper Dwight Stones of the U.S. and Formula One _ driver Emmerson Fittipaldi - of Brazil. This year’s victory earned Budd $38,800. He also won the .CBC-TV Canadian ‘ Superstars title in 1977 and 1978. Budd is probably Canada’s most versatile athiete.- At Hall of Fame banquet Growing up in Delta he set two Canadian age group swimming records as a 14- -year-old and at 17 he set a Canadian record for the half- mile in track and field. He played footbailfor the Junior Blue Bombers and played soccer for Richmond Wanderers, leading that team to victory in.the Sun Soccer Tournament. Budd also played football for U.B.C. Thunderbirds and in addition to playing for the Whitecaps, he was also a member of the Canadian- National --and. World Cup Soccer teams. Joining Budd as a head table speaker will be retired National League Baseball umpire Tom Gorman -and former U.C.L.A. Bruins basketball .coach —John Wooden. John Ferguson, who played eight. seasons with Montreal Canadiens and is now Vice-President and General Manager of Winnipeg Jets, will also speak. Ferguson, along with— ._ swimmers.
