deadpan white Collins mug set
against a black background, might
be the realization of any liberal’s
worst nightmare, but also repre-
sents the light: and dark content
promised by the book’s title.

LAST NIGHT was Halloween, the time when scary
monsters, ugly witches and evil goblins stalk the land.’
Last night the streets of the North Shore saw hosts of
Strangely garbed children travelling door-to-door seeking
candy and other such goodies handed out at the sounds
of Trick or Treat. An old tradition that sees even adults

festooning themselves in costume, Halloween is punc-
tuated by fall leaves, carved pumpkins and fireworks
celebrations. Inquiring Reporter took to the streets one
night to search out an answer to the seasonal question of
what people think of this yearly practice known as Hal-

Collins’ ‘career in Canadian
journalism began in 1952 after he

‘emigrated from Britain and joined

the Calgary Herald, where he won
a national newspaper award in
1953.

He has since slogged in the
journalistic trenches in radio and
television with the CBC and more
recently CJOR and worked as a
reporter for both Vancouver
dailies and as a columnist for the
Vancouver Sun, the Vancouver
Times, The Columbian: and the
Vancouver Courier. .

Collins began writing for the
News in 1984.

Once a “parlor pinko’’, Collins
said his three-year stint toiling in
the Ottawa parliamentary press
