Fourteen-year-old Sherwin Nabbi, who comes from a family of chess players, upset two na- tionally-rated favorites to end as winner in the 14-18 years age group. Nabbi first had to compete against Ali Jabbari, also from Sen- tinel and Dylan Luccock of West Vancouver Secondary in a five- minute sudden death speed chess playoff to determine a winner. Nabbi learned to play chess from his father and his younger brother Shaheen also competed in the under-10 category. Top honors in the middle 10-13 age group was won handily by the favorite, North Van's Dominique Humphrey, . - Owen Watson of Hollyburn Elementary easily took the first prize in the younger group by win- ning all of his five games. Watson is seven years old and has had a national rating for more than a year. Strong chess contingents came from Pauline Johnson and Chart- well Elementary Schools.
