BIMX/skate bowl
decision on hold

RESIDENTS hoping to
see a year-round
BMX/inline skate facili-
ty on the North Shore
will be spinning their
wheels a while Jonger.
The City of | North
Vancouver decided Oct. 19 to
deter its decision on whether or
not to establish a new facility
for — skateboarders, —_ inline
skaters, and BMX enthusiasts
until a deal has been worked
out between the North Shore’s
recreation commission and the
North Shore Curling Club.

“I recommend we deter this
matter until we get a response
from city stat¥ regarding the
curling club’s negotiations with
the Lonsdale — Recreation
Centre,” said Coun. John
Braithwaite. “If we deal with
this issue first (board and bike
facility), we have to be careful
we’re not sending the wrong
raessage to the curling rink.”

The recreation commission
will be approaching council
with a proposal to lease a por-
tion of the North Shore Winter
Club for the purposes of relo-
cating the curling program
from the Lonsdale RecCentre.

If the City and the District
of North Vancouver both sup-
port the proposal, the Flicka
Gymnastics Club would then
move into the current curling
rink, allowing the recreation

commission to seek alternative
locations for a
BMX /inline/skateboarding
facility.

Presently, skateboarders and
the like have only the Outer
Limits Skate Park, outside the
Lonsdale ReeCentre, to. call
their awn,

“We need to work our the
curling club situation at
Lonsdale first. Having said
that, it’s obvious there's a need
for a new (BMX /inline skate)
facility.” said Coun. Darrell
Mussatto.

An ad hoc community com-
mittee, comprised of youth and
adults, has been actively seek-
ing a permanent: vear-round,
indoor facility tor inline skat-
ing, skateboarding, and BMX
biking since 1994. The North
Shore BMX Club has also
approached the city seeking a
motocross dirt track to replace
the now defunct track that
existed near the Centennial
Theatre.

“E know we need a new
facility, perhaps we can put
skateboarding on a circumter-
ence around the parks some-
how,” offered Coun. Stella Jo
Dean. “I've seen them do this
in the United States.~

on the negotiations for the
lease of the North Shore
Winter Club’s facility to
accommodate the curling pro-
gram from the Lonsdale
RecCentre isn’t expected until
next month.
