You can get vour life s free public education nt will take place at 22 sites in British Columbia, during Mental HIness Awareness Week. Participants have the oppor- tunity to learn about the svmp- toms and treatments of depres- sion, co fill out an anonymous 10-question screening test, and to meet with a mental health professional about their results. No) diagnosis is provided but, if necessary, participants dre then given appropriate referrals based on the results of their screening. “The stigma associated with mental illness prevents many people from seeking the help they need,” said Bev Gutray, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, B.C. In North Vancouver the National Depression Screening site is North Shore bourhood House, 225 East 2nd St, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In West Vancouver the site is the West Vancouver Recreation Centre, 780 22nd St.,9 am. to PT a.m. A province-wide toll-free number (1-888-731-1222) is available for British Columbians. These calls will be answered by volunteers, many of whom have experienced depression themselves. Network spins a women’s web NORTH Shore business women have a home- grown networking opportunity. The West Vancouver Women’s Network was started almost 10 years ago by a group of professional women who lived in West Vancouver. Membership has grown to include residents from across the North Shore and Lower Mainland. Potential members must be female and 18 vears or better. Members include owners and proprietors, managers and administrators, health-care practitioners and health product dis- tributors, clothing and skin care experts, real estate and travel agents, accountants and financial planners, and multi-occupa- tional managers (MOMs). Dinner meetings are held monthly during the third week on alternate Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Guest speakers are presented at regular meetings and ample time is allotted for networking. The emphasis at these functions is to learn more about cach other and exchange experiences and ideas in addition to business cards, Members’ only activities include Christmas and summer events where fun and friendship are foremost. Membership is $40 a year, pro-rated quarterly. A newsletter is mailed each month to members. Regular mectings, usually held at Hollyburn Country Club, are $24 for members and $28 for guests.
