4- Sunday, March 16, 1997 — North Shore News Store’s security system faulted by family members From page 1 ing} and sent security, she may have lived. She wouldn’r have bled to death,” said Paul. Steve Clark, National Money Mart president, said on Friday that nothing like this has hap- pened at a store in 14 years of operation in Canada. “It is my understanding to this point from the police that she broke the procedures and invited this person who she knows into the secure area,” said Ciark. He said that the average time the West Hastings Street store closed was 10 p.m. The security system was set up so that if the store was not closed by 10:30 p.m. security people would be immediately dispatched “It’s unfortunate that the crime situation in Vancouver has gotten to this point,” said Clark from Victoria. Clark denied that the store was set up to cater to Skid Row clients. He said the store’s clientele included area business people and tourists. Kaler’s family is critical of Moncy Mart’s security measures. A family member said the posted closing time at the store was 9 p.m. Kaler, they said, left her cage to open the door for the customer and was killed in that area. Family members also stated that the store is located “across the street from a needle park.” A man in his early 20s was in police custody and facing murder charges in connection with the incident to press time on Friday. Vancouver City Police did not return News calls to press time. A Vancouver City Police homicide section emplovee declined to provide any information regarding the incident. Meanwhile family and friends are shocked about Kaler’s murder. “I've known her since Grade 8. We always used to walk to school and home together. She was full of energy.” said Melissa Firbank, 20, of North Vancouver. Kaler was born in North Vancouver. Described as popular, self-assured and with an effervescent personality, Kaler went to school at Ridgeway elementary and Sutherland sec- ondary, where she graduated in 1995. She was attending Capilano College and was interested in becoming a social worker. “She was keeping her options open. She was also thinking about becoming a Jawyer... She was always good at arguing for the underdog,” said Paul. Kaler’s family on her mother's side, the Siddoos, have lived in North Vancouver for three generations. Kaler is survived by her par- ents Davinder Kaler and Sargie Siddoo Kaler, brother Hardy Kaler, aged 18, and many rela- tives.
