Barry Mattock of the North Vancouver RCMP crime prevention section, said that the increase in this type of theft has been rising dramatically over the last six months. “I’m calling it an epidemic,” Mattock said. “Every business that requires a computer to operate is vulnerable to this form of attack.” A focal software company experienced a break-in at its busi- ness in April, and $20,000 worth of equipment was stolen. “We're talking big volume loss- es ona few businesses,” Mattock stated. He pointed out that so far this month, one business‘ suffered an Stt,000 loss, and another had $10,000 worth of equipment stolen, Mattock has the responsibility of instructing local businesses’ on the best ways to improve security. The program he runs is called Crime Prevention = Through Environmental Design. The program's purpuse is to determine security methods which will deter criminals.
