Don't take chances

THE LOWER Mainland’s pre-
dictably mild winters are anything
but consistent regarding annual
snowfall. While some winters dump
ample amounts of the white stuff,
others give way to spring tempera-
tures before a single flake can mate-
rialize.

Even though this fluctuation is a
little less apparent on the North
Shore because of our elevation,
some motorists choose to take their
chances when it comes to winter
traction.

However, today’s tires allow dri-
vers to not have to take chances.

Doug Conway of OK Tires says
that modern snow tires are effective
regardless of the weather and
specifically regardless of whether
there’s any snow on the ground.

“Tread compounds that are
available now don’t take anything
away from traction without snow,”
said Conway. “With the different,
newly patented tread designs you're
not sacrificing anything.”

Canadian Tire’s Dan Worrall
adds that drivers of front-wheel
drive cars should get snow tires for
all four wheels, not just the front.

“Under stopping conditions just
two on the front cause the car to
spin because you have the front two
tires grab and then the back end
comes around on you,” he said.

Both Conway and Worrall agree
that chains are an effective emer-
gency measure during snowfalls, if
they are not needed often.

“You have to take them off
when you hit dry pavement, and a
lot of time in the Lower Mainland
it’s very patchy,” said Worrall
referring to the fact that the chains
will get ruined if used on pavement.
