The decision to terminate the
position effective July 31 was
made by the Ministry of the
Attorney General through its
intermediary the community jus-
tice branch. The position was cre-
ated on March 1 of this year.

North Vancouver City Council
unanimously passed a motion
Monday to “implore and encour-
age” the attorney general to
reverse the decision and continue
to provide sufficient funds to
employ a full-time victim assis-
tant for spousal abuse.

issue fraud alerts

THE FOLLOWING are crime pre-
vention tips from the North Van
RCMP:

Fraud for the most part is pre-
ventable. People should be alert,
ask questions and be skeptical,
especially when something seems
too good to be true. It usually is.

Present fraud scams of note in
the Lower Mainland include:

@ The Nigerian Letter:

This scam has been going on for
a number of years and the people
behind this scam have received
millions of dollars from unsuspect-
ing venture investors.

Typically a letter wil) be sent to
a resident or business asking for
assistance in transferring vast
amounts of money from Nigeria .in
which a percentage of this money
will provide as payment.

This is a sophisticated fraud
involving shadowy international
characters.

Any solicitations of this nature
should be forwarded to the RCMP
North Vancouver fraud squad.

B§ Multi-level marketing sales pro-
gram;

This deals with unsolicited cor-
respondence being received that
provides testimonials from individ-

uals on how they have made large
amounts of money.

The claim is that it is not a chain
letter or pyramid scheme; however,
it works on the same principle in
which “reports” are mailed to other
individuals for $5 in return.

It is strongly recommended that
people not get involved with this
“marketing program.” Should you
receive such a solicitation please
contact the North Vancouver
RCMP fraud squad.

At this time of year many peo-
ple are considering having work
done to the home or yard, Door-to-
door or mail solicitation for reno-
vations, yard work or painting may
be received. It is strongly recom-
mended that no advance payment
for services be made until the job is
completed to a homeowner's satis-
faction.

There are some : people out there
who are quite willing to take your
money and run. If someone choos-
es to pay in advance for a service
and it is then not provided, the per-
son must go through the civil court
process to recover lost funds.

expressed her concerns regarding
the elimination of the position and
added that 18 cases of spousal
abuse have been handled by the
victim assistant in the month of
July alone.

“We've been fighting for three
years to get a position like this
because of the number of new
cases.” said Sharp.
