34 - Sunday, January 20, 1991 - North Shore News TRAVEL Wise to stay away from Mediterranean cruises IF THERE’S one thing for sure, it’s that many people are re-thinking their travel plans just now. For example, 1 doubt if many are booking Mediterranean cruises, if any will be available. Scandinavia, and especially its cruises, ought to be a popular choice for those wanting to visit Europe, but this year seems to be a good one to put Russia on hold. For those with solid savings ac- counts, the South Seas and Asia will increase in popularity. So will North and South American desti- nations (skipping some of the hot spots in Central America and avoiding Colombia like the plague). Not only is the world’s political scene in chaos, but our own economy is dreadful. Many people with ‘‘secure’’? jobs are finding pink slips. One friend of ours, owner of a company supplying luxury items, has had to put his entire staff on four-day weeks. Between the GST and fuel sur- charges, long-distance driving may not be the best idea unless you have camping gear and/or friends you can invite yourselves to visit. “| can explain my knowledge of camping in one word, ‘‘nothing,”’ but I may soon learn. One of the most interesting yearly merchandise shows is the Recreational Vehicle Show. This year it’s being held at Canada Place Stadium from Feb. 28 to March 3. We'll be there. If any readers have warnings or advice I'd appreciate hearing from them. Another way of cutting travel costs is exchanging homes. There’s always a risk involved when com- plete strangers occupy your home, but I feel that the risk is more than compensated by the safety involved in having your house oc- cupied. The right exchangers will care for pets, plants and lawns. They'll take in the mail and newspapers and answer the telephone. There are two ways of arrang- ing an exchange. The first is pri- vately. This is often done through friends or with friends which adds a certain security to the arrange- ment.
