B - Sunday, November 25, 1990 - North Shore News MAILBOX Mulroney blasted for GST ‘tax grab’ Open letter to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney: Once upon a time there was a movie in which a frustrated and enraged television anchorman leaned out of his window and bellowed to no one in particulars, “Wm mad as hell and I’m not go- ing to take it anymore." Fantasy? Hardly. You are cur- rently driving most Canadian citi- zens, including hard core conser- vatives like me, to desperation over the GST. It is a tax grab on the service sector of our economy on an un- precedented scale. There is no doubi that, due to massive government overspending, we are now in serious debt. You have done absolutely nothing to rein in this monstrous debt. Canadians are now talking and anger is evident everywhere. Polls abound with large negative responses from the population to which a democracy, a responsible government, would react. You claim that the Senate is not an elected body and_ therefore should not tie up legislation pro- posed by the House of Commons, a statement to which [ fully subscribe. However, what you conveniently forgot is that this piece of unpopular legislation was not part of your last election plat- form and therefore has never been voted on by the Canadian people. So, who is right — a government joining through an unpopular tax grab or an unelected Senate acting like a bunch of asses? Unfortunately for you and your cronies the general population seems to favor the asses. Further to this your dictatorial manoeuvre Mall should have rink Dear Editor: As Seymour area residents we have recently read of plans to de- velop a small community centre and library behind the proposed Safeway shopping centre at the corner of Mount Seymour Parkway and Mt. Seymour Road. We feel that an ice rink should be included in the community’s plans for this area. With a com- munity library located at Seycove School a second library in the area would be redundant. The closest public skating facili- ties for people in this area are ap- proximately 10 km away with no direct bus routes. We believe the facility would be well-utilized by the seven elementary and two sec- ondary schools from Seymour River to Deep Cove area, With the recent publicity regarding the youth gang problems resulting from the lack of facilities. an ice rink could help alleviate this prob- jem. Perhaps the funding for the ice rink could come partly from a GO B.C. grant as has been done with the proposed Aquatic Centre at the Karen Magnussen recCentre. The timing of this new tax in our current economic cycle is another disaster which will ultimately cause business failures and higher unemployment. All this for what? So that you can (ry to spend your way out of debt? A more prudent way would be to guarantee that this mew tax revenue would go directly to debt reduction. The percentage rate of the GST is also the subject of many con- cerns. Will you guarantee the seven per cent figure? Your policies have given us Third World type debt and your tactics remind rae of the style of a Third World dictator. Where is your credibility with the voters?
