Ugly language does not
advance Collins’ argument

Dear Editor:

Doug Collins has every right to
hold views such as those expressed
in his Nov. 22 column and to write
fully about them. You have every
right to publish them, as well.

I do wish, however, that Mr.
Collins would refrain from his use
of ugly language to describe other
people. Bad manners hurt other
people, and name calling is a habit
from which I try to discourage my
children,

If Mr. Collins is sincere in his
fear of other people and how they

differ from himself in their beliefs
and behavior, he would do better
to advance his arguments against
them in logical, careful and polite
language. It is even possible to
make a point elegantly with more
precision than blunt, indiscrimi-
nate anger.

This was an altogether unfortu-
nate column in tone and in choice
of language. What good could
come of it?
