Money raised by song sales will help support Environmental Watch. in Evil Grows remake environmentalist Terry jacks has teamed with punkmeister Joey Keithley and D.O.A. for a rousing remake of Jacks’ mega-hit Where S OFT-ROCKING hard-talking Evil Grows. Originally recorded 20 years ago, the cut was produced this time around by Jacks and re- corded for maximum sinister effect during Halloween at Profile Sound Studios in Vancouver. The single will be rush released and will also appear on an upcoming D.O.A. album. Proceeds from the song go to help support Jacks’ En- vironmental Watch. Jacks founded the group to press for 2 pollution cleanup of Howe Sound. Western Pulp Inc. {the Wood- fibre pulp mill) and Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (the Port Mellon pulp mill) are thick into a legal battle with commercial fish- ermen who are suing pulp mill owners for discharging pollution they allege has caused the closure of various Howe Sound fisheries. Said Jacks, “Joey's pissed off and the people are fed up.’’ The bizarre Keithley-Jacks creative connection is a result of an earlier collaboration. Approximately 40,000 was raised during two re- cent concerts held at 86 Street to support local environmental lobby groups. Environmental Watch was one of the beneficiaries. The Oc- tober gigs featured Bryan Adams, Barney Bentall, D.O.A., the Scramblers, Little Caesar, BTP and Sons Of Freedom. Jacks mainiains he’s through with music but, “The only reason I did this is that we got the idea to combine these forces. I’m an en- vironmentalist now.” ceeese ** Soundgarden — Louder Than Love, A&M Records 1989 Like wow man! Rock ‘n’ roll conflagration. These Seattle longhairs play out the delirium first unleashed on viny! by the Beatles with that monster guitar riff closing Abbey Road’s | Want You (She's So Heavy). Soundgarden is a big, rumbling heavy-metal mess. The band isn’t cute, clever or pro- gressive. The lyrics are for the most part cryptic, and when they’re not, they're cffensive. But... But... the ironmongers are on te something. Cail it that vin- tage Black Sabbath-Led Zeppelin thing. Call it obsessive guitas- wanking aural anesthetic. just MICHAEL @ BECKER record review don’t call it relaxed. Vocalist Chris Cornelt screams hot rants emanating from some overheated nether region of his troubled mind. High-strung guitars grind and slip about. And it’s all held together by some rock-steady drumming and bass lines that sound like they were recorded way down deep in a bog hole. Metal heads wiil appreciate this roll through the sludge. *** Boogie Down Productions — Ghetto Music: The Blueprint Of Hig Hop, BMG/Jive 1989 KRS-Cine (Kris Parker) has an agenda. This guy is the street — teen runaway, homeless, bounced through shelters in the Bronx, best friend and partner-in-rap murdered — he speaks of what he knows. Parker and posse deploy rap to educate and rnotivate — kind of a rhythmical academic session of Black Urban Core Experience 101. © And so one learns that Moses was a black man, cops can be corrupt, ignorance is not bliss, guns and rugs don’t offer the fast track out of the ghetto, world peace is nec- essary. Parker side-steps rap’s larger pit- falls, egocentric cult-of-personality posturing and “‘dissing,’’ and in- stead uses the medium to unabashedly raise the conscious- ness of those who care to listen up and boogie down.
