i ae at ae eae Pa i ts, ACCORDING TO the Financial Post, the Chinese in B.C. (and in Hong Kong too, no doubt) have been thinking of buying into B.C. television stations and newspapers. Why? Eugene Kwan, a Vancouver lawyer, says it’s because they are ‘‘deeply offended’’ by coverage of the Asian Invasion. As far as I know, Kwan was not talking about the North Shore News and my sins. He was talking about the mainstream media in Vancouver, who have dared to do a bit of reporting on that subject recently. of loving one another. Chopsticks at the alert, everyone!) Hard on her heels came the Sun’s new editor-in-chief, Nick Hills, who said there is a lot of work to be done to ‘‘close the gap of misunderstanding”’ and that yf Ff the media and the politicians are all Jor being invaded, why are the invaders worried? Haven’t they been given the Expo & lands at a knock-down price? Why a anyone should be worried about them 1 don't know. Aren’t they always willing to run up the white flag where anything remotely involving ‘‘racism”’ is involved? The CBC has even said it may be our turn to face the fate of Asia — massive (and self-inflicted) over- crowding. We are nothing if not meek. The Vancouver Sun eventually discovered that Hong Kong was picking up its marbies and dump- ing them here. So it did a series on the issuc. But the stories were cer- tainly not sensational. They merely said what everyone else was saying. The paper has since crawled, how- ever, An early signal came from my favorite former carrot counter — ‘*Dear Nicole’? —— who wrote two tearful pieces explaining how pure her paper was and how the reporter who went to Hong Kong didn’t mean to hurt anybody. (She has also urged readers to take a multicult to lunch in the intcrests more resources would be commit- ted to report the Hong Kong- Vancouver story ‘‘in an even more substantial way.’’ Translation: ‘‘Don’t worry, we're no threat.”’ Other toadyish items have also been run, and both dailies have told us that the Asian Invasion is good for us. If the whole of Hong Kong ups and moves here it’s OK with them. They would take Taiwan, too. And the same is true of most of that bunch on Vancouver City Council. No wonder the Chinese edition of Lifestyte magazine ran a feature under the headline ‘City for Sale.’’ You get one guess at which city the magazine meant. Carole Taylor is one prominent “twe-won't-fight-you"’ multiculter. Mayor Gordon Campbell is another. I throw up every time that yuppie comes on the box smiling his weak smile. He’s having those *‘public dialogue’ meetings, of course, but they have only one purpose: to persuade the rebellious natives that invasion is a salubrious development. Here, however, a query arises. If the media and the politicians are all for being invaded, why are the invaders worried? Haven’t they been given the Expo lands at a knock-down price? Haven’t the politicians in Victoria and Ottawa said they won’t place any restric- tions on the sale of residential properties, and that the more peo- ple we have, the better, just like Hong Kong and Singapore? Answer: they are worried because if the story continues to be reported, it will only be a matter of time before there’s a real blow-up. So ‘buying into the media’’ would make it possible to control the in- formation centres. Result: hap- piness. We would get more multicult- style democracy. Imagine: a sea of puff pieces on what a great guy Li Ka-shing is, and how his offspring, Victor Li, is even better. There would be col- umns on how Vancouver could grow up to be a real metropolis in- stead of mucking around in its old, dumb way; plus features on the glories of the mega-homes. There would then be no need for backtracking stories and bootlick- ing editorials, because no-one would be on track to begin with. It is true that Pacific Press and the TV stations are not for sale right now, but who knows what will eventuate? We already have a Chinese Lt. Gov,, and who would have guessed that a few years ago? Moreover, Li Ka-shing is a billionaire and well able to buy everything in sight. If that happens I could take up carrot counting. Or make for the Falklands. So, too, could many others who now clap their hands at all the great things that are going on® This week at councils NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL, Mondey, April 24 at 7:30 p.m.: Proposed regional funding of cultural organizations’ Silver Harbour Centre-1989 municipal grants/ Emergency heliport site selection/ View study/ Recycling/ Mid-block designa- tion-Official Community Plan.
