NV firm responds to changes in cars OVER THE last 30 years, the North Shore has made major Strides in the area of commier- cial development to meet the needs of its fast-growing com- munity. As the community grew, so did the automobile -- and so did the needs of automobile owners. Largely unchanged until the 1950s, new items such as automatic transmissions, power stecring and brakes, air condi- tioning, air ride and posi track unibody construction changed the face of the auto industry. Repairs to the automobile in these early days were restricted to one General Motors dealer, » . $wo Ford dealers, one Rambler Hillman dealer, the corner ser- vice station and a few small in- dependent repair shops. The growing need for automotive repairs was at that time noted by Dave Taylor, a North Shore homeowner and a technician at a leading Van- couver auto dealer. Taylor felt that these high- tech repairs needed the alten- tion of advanced technicians and a shop that would offer personal attention to the cus- tomers, As a result of secking to fill this service void, Taylormotive was established and opened Feb. 16, 1959, the only automotive repair shop on Pemberton Avenuc. Taylormotive's original employees were mechanical technician Barry Newton, colli- sion technician Bob Crawford, NORTH VANCOUVER Pharmacy services SINCE 1930, Anderson’s Pharmacy has serviced the resi- dents of North Vancouver. Working in the pharmacy, family member Victor Ander- son was trying to obtain his pharmacist's licence when his father, then the pharacy owner, died. After that, he was an appren- tice under pharmacist Barbara Rose, who had stayed to work at the North Vancouver phar- macy for more than 30 years. After Anderson obtained his pharmacist’s licence, he relocated the store to Third and Credit union moves with times ‘THE NORTH Shore. Growing yearly, the credit union in 1986 merged with Harbour Savings Credit Union, increasing membership by 30 per cent and branches from seven to 10. Throughout its history, the North Shore Credit Union has moved with the times, introduc- ing new ideas and better ideas. Last year, the credit union in- troduced a first in Canadian banking — paying members to use automated teller machines. Newton still works for the company as an = automatic transmission and high-tech ad- visor; Crawford works as the body shop manager. Twenty-five other specialists have joined Taylormotive and work as specialists in the com- pany's full range of guaranteed automotive services. “Things have changed on the automobile and they are chang- ing much faster with the in- volvement of on-board com- puter systems, fuel injection and four-wheel drives,’’ said Taylor. Kwong worked almost every day — including Christmas Day — to provide the personal ser- vice that the community had come to expect from Ander- son’s Pharmacy.
