PENGUINS IN human form will
plunge into the icy waters of Deep
Cove when swimmers take a quick
dip at the sixth annual Penguin
Plunge New Year's Day.

Unlike Vancouver's Polar Bear
Swim, the idea behind the Penguin
Plunge is to plunge in and plunge
out, explained Penguin Plunge
Club president Mervyn Ovesen.
“That way it not dangerous or
anything like that.

“It’s a great, fn event,” he said
of the North Vancouver Recre-
ation Commission-sponsored
plunge. ‘‘We have all ages, and

people came last year in costume."

Last year 55 people took the
plunge, and 300 spectators lined
the shore.

The Recreation Commission
mascot — a penguin, of course —
is expected to be there, and ad-
ded attractions this year are newly
completed heated washrooms.

“We haven't had washrooms for
the past two years,” he explained.
“The old ones weren't winterized
and the new ones weren’t built."’

The event starts at 2 p.m., and
