HOME DECORATING has never been easier thanks to new products and innovative ideas from the lighting industry. Professional decorators know the importance of effective lighting in the home. The following lists some ideas about lighting specific areas in your home: *Reading chair — Install a wall or a hanging fixture so that the bottom of the shade is near eye level, about 1,200 mm. (48"') above the floor. Locate it slightly behind and 500 mm. (20°’) to the left or right of the reading materi- al. This minimizes glare. *Bedrooms — Fach bedroom can be a study, sewing room, TV room or sickroom. You need good lighting for seeing in drawers and closets. For reading in bed, consider a hanging lamp which saves space on tubles for other purposes. Also consider track lights or wall lights. Young children often play, study or read at a desk, on the bed or on the floor in their bedrooms. They need high level lighting on all these areas. *Kitchens — For seeing into cabinets and drawers, install fix- tures 450 mm. (18'’) to 600 mm. (24’’) from the cabinets. Fixtures should be located over work areas to avoid shadows on the work sur- face. Mount fixtures as nearly over centre of sink (or an_ island counter) as possible. Use recessed incandescent on 400 mm. (16’’) centres with a 100w ‘‘A” or a 75w reflector bulb. An energy saving alternative is a 20w to 40w fluorescent fixture. For work areas under cabinets, in- stall undercabinet lights along the front edge of the cabinets. Use a 20w fluorescent for a 900 mm. (36"’) counter, 30w for up to 1200 mm. (48) and a 40w fluorescent for up to 1500 mm. (60) of work surface. For the dining area, you’ll probably want a decorative hanging fixture. ePianos/Music Stands —- Use a recessed eyeball with at least a 74w PAR FL reflector bulb centered above and 600 mm. (24’’) behind the music. For better illumina- tion, use two fixtures 750 mm. (30"’) apart, aimed at the music. eSewing -- Needlework and sewing requires concentrated high level lighting. Install the fixture 300 mm. (12’') to the left of the work and 175 mm. (7'’} toward the rear of the chair. Aim the light directly on the needlework or the sewing machine. *Tablegames — Ping pong, billiards and other tablegames use a 150w incandescent recessed square or a 2-40w tube fluorescent fixture over each end of the table. For card tables, one answer is a 150w hanging fixture with bottom diffuser mounted 900 mm. (36"’) above the table, this same system can be used for the other tablegames. *Bars — There are many imagi- native ways to light bars, including recessed fixtures, pendants, and Broadway lights. *More ideas — Use a chain- hung lamp to eliminate the need for table stands.
