privileges to these areas even
though, in many cases, they
are the same distance from
them as is the North Shore.

While Nosth Shore resi-
dents can call approximately
400,000 main telephones toll
free, Vancouver and Rich-
mond can call an additional
160,000 toll free telephones,
for a higher monthly rate.

Voting against the motion,
Ald. Craig Clark suid
response of local business
showed an unwillingness to
shoulder any increased cost
for the toll fiee privileges.

A District. Chamber of
Cammerce survey polled 49
Chamber members, 27 of
whom indicated that they
would not be willing to pay
any such increased cost for
extended toll free services.

“1 don’t think we need the
service,’’said Clark, ‘Costs
would increase dramatically.
User pay, I believe, is the
best system.””

Ald. Joan Gadsby agreed,
saying the service would end |
up benefiting the few at the : "

had found the present toll
system frustrating.

Crist, Segal. and
Dykeman voted in favor of
the motion provided an in-
crease in phone rates would
result in a parallel increase in
quality of service.
