Haig spells out hard-line policies FORMER U.S. Secretary of State General Alex- ander Haig, Jr. said Thursday that a successful American foreign policy will be a balance between democratic values and ideals, and due attention to the ‘‘international jungleplace’’ in which the U.S. operates. Receiving a standing ova- tion from an audience of over 500 at the $150 a plate dinner sponsored by the youth wing of the B.C. Social Credit Party at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Haig focussed on American foreign policy, calling for American presidents in the 1980s to re-establish a bi- partisan. foreign policy in order to ensure American success in dealing with coun- tries at either end of the po- litical spectrum. There is only one way to maintain peace in the nu- clear age, said Haig, adding the U.S. cannot afford to subscribe to several schools of thought. He defended American in- volvement in the arms race buildup, stressing it would be folly for the U.S. gov- ernment to undertake a unilateral reduction in arms. Said Haig: ‘‘We have the courage and the will to do what must be done, to match them system for system. It is the only way. There is no other solution.”’ He said the Soviet Union is still in a state of transition following the 1983 death of Yuri Andropov, with new leader Konstantin Chernenko currently losing out in a power struggle with local bureaucrats. ‘‘Chernenko didn’t expect Andropov to leave so quick- ly,’ said Haig, suggesting Chernenko may have already Out-stayed his own date with the calendar.
