A6 - Sunday, June 10, 1984 - North Shore News EM editorial pag c He _ NEWS VIEWPOINT A size too big? hose TV clips showing seas of empty seats at B.C. Stadium during recent Whitecaps games may tell more than the fact that attendances are running far below the team’s break-even point. At least in part, they may explain WHY. Crowds tend to feed on themselves and the reverse is also true. Once a crowd starts to dwindle, the chances are it will keep right on dwindling. In the Whitecaps’ case, the thinness of the crowd currently displayed on TV suggests psychologically to viewers -- as well as to the faithful actually present -- that the event may not be really worth the price of attending in person. The excitement in the stands is missing. It’s like turning up for a party that most of the other guests have decided to skip. Such is the optical illusion created by the vastness of the Stadium itself, which can seat twice as many fans as the Whitecaps actually need to get back into the black. Even if they could again attract the 30,000 break-even figure, the place would still look depressingly half-empty -- in stark contrast to the en- thusiastic atmosphere at the old Empire Stadium where exactly the same number of spectators constituted a capacity crowd. Doubtless there are other reasons for the Whitecaps’ present troubles. Cynicism among fans, bred by internal scandals. The problems of the league itself. The state of the economy. Take your choice. It would be a sad irony, however, if the sheer size of Vancouver’s magnificent sports Showcase contributed to the death of in- ternational soccer in B.C. No coronation nly one thing seems certain about this week's Liberal leadership convention: with John Turner and Jean Cretien believed by many to be neck-and-neck, and Don Johnston reported by others to be snap- ping at their heels, it's poing to be no ‘‘coronahion”’ for Mr. Turner or anyone else. Remembering B.C.’s recent NDP contest and Bob Skelly you've a betler chance of a winning bet next weekend with a 6 49 coupon. —m—_____-_-___-ore weoplay Advortising ye0 0511 north shore | Classified Advertising 986 62272 Newsroom BBS 2131 Circulation 966 1337 SUNDAY WEDNESDAY FA.
