Council approved a schedule Monday which will see the annual rates for once a week pick-up at all residences. and dwellings rise from $46.to $S3:56. _ Commercial rates will also rise to $51.56 for once a week pick-up, $112.49 for twice a. week, $196.85 three times. a week, $824.90 four times a week and $1,406.08 five times a week.. The 11 per cent hike for the average resident is due to in- creased dumping costs. The right to such increases was in- cluded in the five-year con- tract with Smithrite which was awarded last year. **] don’t approve of sub- contracting and if I had been on Council at the time I would have argued against it. We lost eight City employees, and are getting the same ser- vice,’” commented Alderman John Braithwaite. According to the City Engineer’s report to North Vancouver Council, Smithrite’s service is produc- ing. virtually the same results with: the same number of complaints and problems. City staff may have been able to continue to provide the service without i increasing rates..City wages have not in- creased, while tonnage col- lected is down-due to-the new newspaper collection subcon- tractor who is serving North Vancouver City and District and West Vancouver. City staff attempted to re- tain. the garbage service but were unable to streamline their operation to underbid private enterprise. West Vancouver has also contracted out its garbage collection, but the District of North Vancouver and the Ci- ty of Vancouver continue to provide this service, believing that staff should be able to do the job cheaper without need for making a profit.
