C12 - Sunday, June 19, 1983 - North Shore News LAUGH OR CRY Last Sunday we ran two letters which commented on our Apnl 24 column. |! menuoned a third one wnich ended up with “I challenge you to print this letter”. Here iLiS in its entirety: “Dear Sir: When I first read your article “The Best Authonty” 1 didn't know whether to laugh or cry. However, I felt compelled to respond to it. Sir, your claim to reject logical theones and those “systems of reasoning” which do not glonfy your own pseudo-philosophical speculations. Your whimsical utterances are indeed not novel or new. In my estimation, the existentialist philosophers such as Kierkegaard and Nietzsche brought this sort of self aggrandizement to a culmination in- the tast century. Kirkegaard wrote, ‘subjectivity is truth’. This is a position not far removed from your own I believe. Nietzsche in a similar vein purported that one must ‘create one’s own moral framework’ and rise above the lowly masses or ‘herd animals’. In our own people such as Sartre, Heidegger. and others expounded similar views. The main structure of their thought 1s rooted in ai rejection of ‘systems. What do these subjective speculations amount to? No existentialist ‘thinker’ has revealed any earth shattering or even just helpful bits of revelations from ‘inner self.’ I find the shallowness of century, Camus, Ionescu NEW WEST VAN SERVICE the growing edge by Hayden Stewart your view, if it could be called one. uninspiring. You probably could not care less what I think and normally I would not respond to these ideas were it not for the fact that you do not seem to be without influence. The sad state of affairs this world finds itself in can be traced back to some degree to ‘doing one’s own thing’. If I am my own absolute authority then nothing prevents me from doing as | please. No moral law is sacred and I have a foun- dation for breaking a cmminal law - if 1 am not fearful of suffering the con- sequences. You, perhaps, do not need philosophical backing but many of us do. I prefer to believe that ‘two heads are better than one’ and that all Freelance Counsellor Hayden Stewart mas be reached at 261-0242 for appotamenss for individual family or group counselling the accumulated wisdom of the ages has not been a gigantic exercise in futility. This is not to say that one ought to be gullible and swallow every ‘system’ that comes along. but merely to stress that it is prudent to study and learn the thoughts of others and then to con- sider what might be a wise choice. Thank you for your time. I challenge you to print this letter”. Well there! The letter is in print. What the writer calls “the fact” that I “do not seem to be without influence” apparently led him to feel “compelled” to write. 1 find it a bit scary to have in- fluence over others and if the writer's letter tends to keep in better balance any influence I may have, I offer him my gratitude. utler buys your shoppin The Butler Shopping Ser- vice is a whole new way of looking at shopping.
