B2 - Sunday, May 8, 1983 - North Shore News Pic By NOBBY STILES In sport, as in all areas of life things never go always as planned. There are many -low periods, and it’s often how you handle those lows and come back from them that determines what you are made of. In soccer, as in most other sports, the athlete can’t afford the luxury of feeling sorry for himself or brooding about his problems. The next game is never that far away and he has to be ready for it. However, sometimes it's hard to rebound. It was the third game of the 1966 World Cup and England was playing France in a crucial match for us. The pitch at Wembley was damp and skiddy and the intensity of the game was fierce. We were leading with 20 minutes to go when Simon, an excellent French forward, came towards me with the ball. When I saw him coming my way I started to close him down and got ready to go at him. When I went in, I went in hard. In my experience it was the only way to win the ball. But just as I was ready to strike, Simon turned into me. My timing was off, terribly, and I hit him hard. He went down and didn't move. After some time he had to be taken off on a stretcher, badly injured. I felt terrible. To this day, I can't remember ever making a worse tackle. For the final 20 minutes of the game, I kept backing off. I didn’t touch the ball because I felt so awful about what had happened. Because I have poor eye- sight, many of the players made excuses. for me saying it was my contacts, but I knew I had made a terrible tackle. Period. I felt so bad about it that I couldn't even go over and apologize to the man. To do so would, I felt at the time, be hypocritical. At our next team practice the incident still bothered me and was affecting my WEST VAN CRICKETEERS West Vancouver “A” XI marked their return to the First Division of B.C. We had a game coming up Saturday and I felt for sure that I wouldn't be playing because of that dis- graceful tackle. But Alf Ramsay, our manager, came to me and asked if the incident had been deliberate. When I reassured him it had been a clumsy accident, he told me I would be in the game. In that game, I had to try and finally put the incident aside and get back to my style of play. I had to go into that game and tackle as I normally did, both for the team's sake and mine. They depended on me to do my bit and Alf Ramsay had shown that he believed in me and had confidence in my abilities. This sort of thing happens in sport quite often. Players score Own goals, give passes away, lose the ball, do silly things and are penalized for it. It’s part of the game. If everything was perfect, sport would be pretty dull. One of the most in- teresting aspects of sport is watching this happen and seeing how the player handles it. Make no mistake about it. the floor People who have reached the top of their sport or profession are not perfect. In fact, perhaps they've even made more mistakes than the average person. But they've built on their mistakes and gone on to higher levels because of them. I was forced to learn from my brutal tackle against Simon, who thank goodness, recovered and played four more years. I had to recognize what had happened, but I also had to put it out of my mind and not worry about it happening again. I had to go forward from that point or give it up. We all make mistakes. It’s what we do with them that counts. A Van for all Seasons It's a fabulous holiday on wheels — your private get-away for this summer and years to come.
