B2 - Wednesday, May 26, 1982 - North Shore News ES Sport side-lines by Andy Fraser Day of games A BIG day for sport around the lower mainland with the high school track and field meet dominating activities at the old Empire Stadium, the B.C. Lions holding their first pre-season media tub thumping bash for the fast approaching CFL season, and Vancouver Whitecaps unveiling John Wile, the elder statesman centre back from West Bromwich Albion, who, it is hoped, will add confidence and comfort to the ‘Caps back line. Watching the faster, higher and farther crowd at Empire makes one wonder just what is to be the fate of the stadium come next July or so, when the domed edifice will welcome the hordes of fans. It’s highly unlikely that the high school will be using the facility, strictly because it doesn't have a track, to say nothing of the economics of renting that type of struc- ture. Do you remember all the “experts” saying that Empire was totally unsafe? Lf so, will it be torn down throwing an excessive burden at Swangard, the only alter- native track and field facility for holding spectators and large numbers of com- petitors? Or will the powers that be throw up an amateur sport palace encompassing all sports somewhere in the lower mainland? LIONS ROARING Meanwhile, at today, noon and well beyond, Lions coach Vic Rapp along with GM Bob Ackles, president Paul Higgins and a cast of hundreds were kicking off their hype for the 1982 season. Judging by their aggressive campaign for ticket sub- scribers to date, the Leos are out to counter any trend that seems to be developing with Whitecap crowds, and to counter any downturn in the economy. Their marketing seems to be on the right track and it would appear that the Whitecaps need to do something along the same line, while at the same time staying away from the dumb and embarrassing animals with balloons. Since it’s a fact that the Whitecaps receive poor press when compared to other such local activities as major league baseball, then they are going to have to do more through the various, advertising mediums. Lions are doing it with their BCing you bit, and it is catching. Mind you, Whitecaps would do just fine if they could put together a string of exciting games rather than the intriguing § stutter-step they seemed to have developed over the winter. STARCH FOR THE CAPS But then, it seems to be a Vancouver habit. Canucks do it for 60 games, the Lions always seem to have their mid-season collapse and the ‘Caps are now following suit. John Wile, a 35 year old seasoned pro should help out in the back. It's more than apparent that the centre backs have been in trouble throughout the still young season. Wile should be able to add some starch to the line. Both assistant coach Peter Lorimer and Team Captain Terry Yorath describe the veteran of more than 600 leagues games as a good solid professional, in the same mold as _ Roger Kenyon, and one who will add confidence to the young defenders. While there will probably be a signing soon of a “flash” player — that’s a guy designed to put backsides on the empty boards at Empire — there still remains the question of the North American development in the league. Like it or not, there has been a general downtum in the calibre of play throughout the league this season which is perhaps more than coincidental with the fact that for the first time, four North Americans have to be on the field at the same time. Perhaps too much too soon. Even for the Whitecaps vaunted reserve and youth system which seems, for the moment, to have hit a bit of a stall in producing what’s needed now. Regardless of any problems, ‘Caps should be in better form Saturday night when they take on the Porttand Timbers in what must be a night for revenge following the disaster in Portland.
