* A2-Wednesday, November 5, 1980 - North Shore News A very ‘macha’ lady I remember meeting Judy LaMarsh at a party in Deep Cove, back in 1973, when she was doing a morning talk show for CK WX. for years, writing about their varying degrees of competence, and, ob yes, ignorance. There was Judy. No longer a cabinet minister, and, Undeci FROM PAGE A1 The overal results for the North Shore were: By areas, was as follows: NORTH V ANCOUVER Ves........-..-.046- 12% No ...-...22--200eee 61% Undecided ..........- 27% “Bird in a Gilded Cage”. I'd mocked her in print as “Judy LaSwamp”. You don't reafly run into that many women who are accustomed to power, a reflection of the fact that not very many women have had the experience of running a huge organization, of having hundreds or thousands of people at their command. Ms. Lamarsh obviously had. There were a lot of people around at that party back in 1973, and she was, after all, visiting royalty. It took a while to get near her to deliver a barb or two. Well, it was like a yappy little hound dog wandering up to what looks to be another tabby. only to discover, poor beast, that he has just tweeked a tiger. Judy was quite kind. really. In the brief verbal sparring match that followed, she wunmediately proved herself to be smarter than me, more knowledgeable in every respect except maybe occult hterature, much more witty. much more charming. much more dangerous, and at least three times as fast on her mental feet as | was. Well, that was quite a shock, I must admit. The kind part was that she ed vote significant WEST VANCOUVER SC — 18% No ...........-2--.-.- 43% Undecided .......... 37% The two neighborhoods most loyal to Confederation were Blueridge and Deep Cove, m both of which not a single respondent answered “yes” to the survey question. In Blueridge the results were 86% “no” and 14% “un- decided”. Corresponding figures for Deep Cove were 82% and 18%. In sharp contrast were two West Vancouver com- munities. In Ambleside the results were 18% “yes”, 35% “no” and a dramatic 47% “un- decided”. Horseshoe Bay respondents voted 18% “yes”, 40% “no” and 42% “undecided”. The significant figure overall is the high “un- decided” response. When this is taken mto account, only a little over onc out of every two North Shore respondents (57%) presently say they would not, under any circumstances, support separation. In West Vancouver the respondents firmly rejecting separation under any cir- cumstances (48%) are presently a minority. She was too, that very rare creature: A woman who served in the Second World War as part of the Allied Intelligence Service. And just like almost all other war vets, she had a little streak of contempt in her for the soft generation that had followed. She quit the Liberal Party when Pierre Trudeau became prime minister because she wouldn't work for anyone so “ruthless”. Judy will be remembered in history books for her bref tenure on the political stage, and her large achievements in that me. But what TH remember her for is a_ lesson in feminism that she gave me. Strength, or presence, the embodiment of will, per- sonal power, whatever you want to call it, doesn't have a damned thing to do with one’s sex. It’s entirely a matter of the soul. If she hadn't quit politics, aod if — 12 days ago — she hadn't been killed by cancer, it occurs to me that she would have been one of the few women in the country within reach of the polden ring of the prime ministership. Can I say this? Judy was a very macha lady. LARGE Selection of Holland Bulbs Open: Wed.-Sunday Closed Mon.-Tues.
