Municipalities urging the. provincial government to regulate Sunday shopping. The resolution was brought up after a letter was received by council from the Retail Merchants Association of Canada, urging such a move. Most council members present agreed with Alderman Frank Marcino that ‘it doesn’t seem right to have one uncontrolled day of the week.’ Alderman Murray Colcleugh described the vast number of stores opening on Sinday as ‘a kind of creeping cancer,’ and he said he was ‘unalterably opposed to it.’ When the resolution was changed from ‘control Sunday ‘regulate Sunday shopping,’ all council members with the exception of Alderman Gary shopping,’ to A BOWL OF MILK FOR ADULTS, and half a bow! for cats. This week was the last chance council had to forward resolutions to the U.B.C.M, which is scheduled to meet from September 5-7. Mahon wading pool to open this summer North Vancouver City council has voted to keep the Mahon Park wading pool | open this ‘summer, by providing its parks depart- ment with the money to operate the pool. . Council d the motion Monday night, after being notified by the North Vancouver Recreation Commission that the commission, due to budgetary constraints, would not be able to keep the six wading pools in North Van open for the summer. The motion passed by council will provide $1,075 02 to hire a qualified at- tendant to watch the pool for the same hours that it was in use last year. ‘wading pools Alderman Murray Colcleugh, who is chairman of the recreation com- mission, informed council that the Mahon Park wading pool is one of the three in North Vancouver that is well used. City council was also informed, in a letter from the commission, that the Mahon Park swimming pool will only be closed for one day a week, rather than two days as council had been informed last weck. The commission said it would be able to keep the pool open for an extra day by reducing by one hour a day, the time the pool will be open during the week. The pool will be closed on Mondays for necessary maintenance. During debate on the motion, dissatisfaction with the operation of the recreation commission was expressed by some council members. And North Vancouver District council has held over until June 25 the question of kecping wading pools in the District open. A number of suggestions, including the possible use of volunteers was discussed, as the council learmed of the recreation commission's plans for staying within their budget. the .
