oan co a Pen eye ot page 8, April 13, 1977.- North The North Shore Tenants Association has welcomed the reduction of the max- imum allowable rent increase from 10.6 to 7 per cent annually, recently announ- ced by the provincial. gov- ernment, as a-step in the right direction. But the tenants continue to question the wisdom of across the board increases which make no distinction between good landlords and those who are not. Ernie Crist, executive member of the North Shore Tenants Association said that, although the decrease is welcome. and does away with ‘a biatant injustice, tenants would have liked to see a more discriminating attitude towards landlords. Some landlords are already gouging tenants and spend littié, if anything, om the upkeep of their premises. ‘‘Naturally, we are pleased that the government has decreased the ceiling,’’ said JOHN PASCHOLD CARRIE WHETSTONE © hore News | Crist. ‘“We have appealed to the government and to the premier on several occasions to reduce the ceiling. On the other hand, we cannot condone the existing short- comings of the present set-up. “What we would like to see,’’ continued Crist, ’’and what we have advocated for a long time is the setting up of a municipal board of appeal consisting of a landlord representative, a tenant rep- resentative and a _ neutral party provided by the muni- cipality, which would deal with rent increases in a more discriminating manner. _ Some North Shore rental accommodations are badly Geteriorating even though the landlords have done just fine in terms of return on. their investment, said Crist. ‘*There should be a muni- cipal board of appeal to which landlords would have to justify their increases and that is what we have, in fact, GARNER COSSEY ~ ae eee et advocated.”’ | | The North Vancouver Re- . creation Commission’s Com- munity Recreation Program begins the week of April 18.
