Fortun- — ately for the majority of them, computers at Revenue Canada, Taxation caught and corrected the errors, auto- atically adjusting =the amount of tax usually in favour of the taxpayer. The single most common ‘cause of errors last year was the calculation of the Canada and Quebec Pension Plan payment. Of the nearly one million adjustments to re- turns in this area the majority resulted from tax- payers either neglecting to claim their CPP or QPP overpayment or neglecting to include their contribution as an eligible deduction. Other common errors included mis- calculations or claims contributions ‘by information contained in T4 information slips. | for Unenployment insurance premium.calculations caused an additional 440,190 errors. Taxpayers’ claims for the interest and dividend income. deduction resulted in 350,000. errors and calculations con- cerning medical expenses and. charitable donations caused 200,000. 7 “A total of 188,000 tax-— payers neglected to claim payable, . - married unsupported - ween ee - expense deduction? of $150 and another 160,000 reported income that did not agree with information supplied by employers on T4 and. T4A information slips. The pension income de- duction caused 117,000 errors in claims for personal exemptions such as the age, married exemption and claim for wholly dependent child- ren accounted for 110,000 errors. The eguivalent-to- exemption exemptions for other depen- dents’ accounted for 82, 000 errors. Many errors are picked up | by computers at the Taxation Data Centres and last year resulted in savings to tax- ‘payers of $150 million. In addition, many taxpayers ‘benefitted as a result of general averaging which is applied automatically to all tax returns and averages a taxpayer’s income over a five-year period. This meant an average saving of $78 in taxes for 2,750,000. tax- payers. Last year a total of 9.5 million taxpayers received ‘average refunds of $268.36, up from $244.30 the year before. Refunds are delayed when a taxpayer’s return is rejected because of insuffi- cient information, arithmetic and other errors.
