into the ground and pollute local
creeks. -

This summer, all three North
Shore fire departments have once
again embarked on Operation Oil
Tank in’ attempts to locate aban-
doned tanks.

-: The program involves a total of
“five students hired to cover the
North Shore to conduct surveys
locating abandoned tanks.

The students carry identification
and' will be knocking on local
doors until September.

The students have been trained
‘to help homeowners find out if an
‘abandoned tank is located on their
property. The: students also. will
dip the tanks for fluids.

condominium starts,’’ said Don
Renaud, senior market analyst
with CMHC in Vancouver.

June starts were 14% higher

than in May when 1,685 units
were started. Housing starts in the
January to June period were 15%
higher than the same period in
1992, ;

Housing starts in June were
highest in Vancouver City at 664
