A 10-YEAR veteran of the Attorney-General’s
department has taken the provincial government
up on its proposal to replace some provincial
services with private companies.

West Vancouver resident,
faces a long, uphill fight in
his determination to provide
a private service for juveniles
and voung adults

Goodman not only

counselling service for
youths in trouble with the
law -— or at risk of running
atoul of the law — but to
provide a para-legal service

That means he’s attemp-
ting to change the rules
about the way court repre-
sentation 1s handled

“What I’m trying to
become, in effect, is oa
private probation officer.”’
says Goodman, who 1s in the
process now of setting up his
business. “‘The only thing
the government offers now
(in terms of providing pro-
bation services) ts after the
fact. Juveniles have to wait
until they are in trouble be

Goodman says

He's working om the ques-
ton now, having appeared
before 4a provincial com-
mission examining legal aid
in the province and planning
to write a number of lawyers
in the near future to see if he
can convinee one to back his
concepts and give him some
access to the court system

“My major energies are
going to be focussed on
getting the para-legal con-
cept adopted,’ he says “It's
going to take some time °

While he’s working on
that, Goodman will be
searching for chents for the
counselling end of his
business Where we teels his
experiences with the justice
system will hold him in good
stead.

him, to listen to their pro-
blems and to help) reopen
lines of communications
with parents and society in
general
